A Life of Service is a Life the Counts

Bobby Powell Jr., was elected to the Florida Senate in 2016 after spending four years in the Florida House of Representatives.  Sen. Powell served as the Senate Minority Leader Pro-Tempore from 2020-2022. During that same time period, he also served as the Chairman of the Florida Legislative Black Caucus, which consisted of 27 Black State Legislators who represented nearly every area of the state. As the Chairman of the Black Caucus, Sen. Powell was responsible for leading through the pandemic of COVID 19 and the murder of George Floyd.

Sen. Powell is a recognized leader in the legislature as well as in his community.  Along with his leadership roles Sen. Powell has served on various appropriations committees including the Full Appropriations Committee and the powerful Rules Committee. Sen. Powell is involved in community and professional development organizations such as the Greater Chamber of the Palm Beaches, the Palm Beach North Chamber of Commerce, the Urban League’s New Urban Development Corporation Board and Leadership Palm Beach County where he received the Leadership Excellence Award in 2017.  

Sen. Powell is a native of Palm Beach County, and a Palm Beach Gardens High School alumnus who went on to graduate Magna Cum Laude, from Florida A&M University earning a degree in Journalism with a concentration in Public Relations. He also obtained a Master’s of Science in Urban & Regional Planning degree from Florida State University. While being a member of the Florida Legislature, Sen. Powell also worked as a project manager for Urban Design Studio and is certified by the American Institute of Certified Planners in Palm Beach County.

His motto, “A life of service is a life that counts,” guides his moral compass and work as a dedicated public servant.
